In der Hölle

Zur Biografie des Autors: Khashayar Mostafavi wurde 1982 im Iran geboren. 2002 begann er an der Kunst - Fakultät der Teheran-Universität in Teheran "Theaterwissenschaft mit Schwerpunkt Szenisches Schreiben" zu studieren. Er setzte das Studium mit dem Masterstudiengang "Theater und Regie" fort und beendete es 2011 an der Tarbiat-Modares Universität in Teheran.

 Khashayar Mostafavi schrieb mehrere Kurzgeschichten und Theaterstücke. Seine Stücke "Rostige Wurzeln der Schöpfung", "Regierung der Khan-Zeit" sowie "Nashörner" (basierend auf Eugène Ionesco) wurden erfolgreich unter der Regie des Autors auf die Bühne gebracht.

 Sein erstes Buch "Die Geburt des Iranischen Dramas" erschien 2012 im Afraz Verlag in Teheran/Iran. Zwei weitere Bücher des Autors unter dem Titel "Die Tage nach und nach" und "Theater- Angst und Panik" (nach Angaben und Werken von Fernando Arrabal) warten seit fünf Jahren auf die Freigabe des Zensur des Kultur-Ministeriums in Teheran. 

 Außer einigen Kurzfilmen drehte der Künstler auch zwei lange Dokumentarfilme: "Unser Kirschgarten“ und "Kämpf mit mir“. Khashayar Mostafavi erhielt in den letzten Jahren mehrfach Preise für seine literarischen und künstlerischen Arbeiten. 

 Das Buch „In der Hölle“ ist eine Sammlung von siebzehn Kurzgeschichten, die zwischen 2002 und 2012 geschrieben wurden. Die Inhalte sind vor allem von der zeitgenössischen Atmosphäre des Irans beeinflusst. Die Erzählungen sind, obwohl sehr unterschiedlich, durch einen roten Faden verbunden. Jede der Geschichten ist wie eine Reise in die geistigen Welten der Charaktere, die verwirrt und ratlos nicht wissen, wie sie mit ihrem komplexen Leben umgehen sollen. 

 Mostafavis Figuren stellen sich immer wieder der Frage: "warum, wofür dass alles?" Sie suchen nach einer Lösung, sich von ihren enttäuschenden Erlebnissen, auch von den eigenen Illusionen, zu lösen, um irgendwie die extrem unsinnigen Situationen der Gegenwart aus ihrem Alltagsleben zu beseitigen und damit letztendlich ihrem Leben einen Sinn zu geben.

به نظرم همش تقصیر اون عرق گس بود. مزه‌ی خرما می‌داد. احتمالا با اسانس خرما، آب و یه مشت قرص والیوم ده درستش کرده بودن. بر‌خلاف طعمش یه آرامش خوبی داشت. ما چار نفری دور یه میز نشستیم و سعی کردیم مزه‌ی مزخرفش و تحمل کنیم و تا می‌تونستیم و جا داشتیم بالا رفتیم. حتی من یه کم بیشتر خوردم چون امیدوار بودم از دست اون فین‌فینای مزاحم که از زکام یا یه همچین چیزی بود خلاص شم. وقتی اون زهرماری و فرو می‌دادیم اولش صورت‌مون از سوزش یا چندشی جمع می‌شد و بعد سعی می‌کردیم لبخند بزنیم، خوشحال می‌شدیم. نیمه‌ی شعبان بود و همه‌ی ملت برای ظهور، ولادت، شهادت، سلامت یا عروج آقا امام‌زمون تو خیابونا پلاس بودن و جشن گرفته بودن. لابد اونا هم از یه چیزی شاد بودن چون شیرینی و شربت پخش می‌کردن. خیابونا چراغونی شده بود و شهر از همیشه روشن‌تر می‌زد. ما چار نفر هم دوست داشتیم به خاطر یه چیزی جشن بگیریم. حالا یادم نمی‌یاد چی، فقط می‌دونم فرداش تعطیل رسمی بود و می‌تونستیم تا لنگ ظهر کپه‌ی مرگ‌مون و بزاریم. همه چی آماده بود اما نه، مشکل همون بهونه بود. بهونه برای جشن گرفتن. اولش همون طور غمناک دور میز حلقه زدیم. تو چشمای هم نگا نمی‌کردیم فقط مراقب ته استکانامون بودیم که قطره‌ای ته‌ش نمونه. وقتی آدم تو یه جا غریبه است و می‌خواد بشینه به می گساری، هزار جور فکر درباره‌ی آدمای دور و ورش تو سرش می‌ریزه. اینکه چرا دماغ این زنه رو سگ گاز گرفته. یا اون یکی چرا اینقدر کش‌دار بهم خیره شده. اما بعد یواش‌یواش همه چی عادی می‌شه انگار که باید همین طوری باشه و غیر این نمی‌شه. اون گُرگُرش که بیاد دیگه همه چی حله. فراموش می‌کنی و شروع می‌کنی به خندیدن. خوب یادم نیست ولی فکر کنم اول من شروع کردم. گفتم: «خب خیلی از چیزا احتیاج به بهانه ندارن، مگه نه؟» ...

The Stories of Loneliness

For readers looking for stories about predicaments of life, “To Hell” is a good collection of seventeen short stories about everyday life of the ordinary people who are mostly either experiencing a dilemma or narrating it.

There is a thread that runs through the book. Majority of stories include characters who had never thought they were supposed to experience such predicaments. So they start analyzing events after happening, as if they are not equipped with any kinds of prognostication. Although apart from a few stories like “In the Lake of Grief”, or “The Youths” in which characters come up with a decision showing their rebellion or struggle, this analysis is not followed by a hopeful outcome. We are facing with those who miserably feel alone and exhausted, those who have missed or are missing something and are not motivated enough to stop it, those who are trapped on the inside with a sense of stasis, feel regret or can’t talk to others about what they feel or have in mind, and generally those who feel lost in a community of people. It is difficult to emerge from a story with the impression that things will get better, or that they will even change at all. While reviewing the past, characters find the whole life absurd, as we see in “Things that are being missed”, “The Seasons”, or “The Cries in Darkness”; or they cannot understand why and how the pickle they are living in, has started. Where does the problem lie? Why is it as if there is no common language to speak, and consequently, no common understanding to share? The book doesn’t answer but the characters are just portrayed there for us to ponder.

The variation of the collection is desirable. People of different ages, jobs, and social classes are presented. While the setting or characters’ thoughts make them touchable, their reactions to the events sometimes wipe out this familiarity and leave us wondering about their special ways of handling a situation.

The point of view, either first or third person, allows the reader to immediately engage, but personally I enjoyed the distinguished narrative language of stories which takes a predicament and turns it to an ordinary event of life that is completely compatible with the theme and mental conditions of the characters. Uninterruptedly, it keeps you reading a disaster as fluent as a common newspaper report, and in this way, isn’t it willing to trigger something about our being which keeps us living a vanishing life as ease as a habitual moment, by the help of time?

To Hell is about melancholic characters in the very threshold of disintegration in times of mental and physical crises; some embrace their own destruction and some others simply skip it. The images made by stories, though sometimes fragmented,reminds the state when you are awakening sweating and horrified  in the middle of a movie showing on TV, which you've forgot to turn off, and finding out that you were dreaming about the same subject but still not sure which one is the movie and which one the dream.The images are twice stronger when complicated human interactions are included.They are cinematic. The details of dialogue-based scenes recall the long shots of a movie with shifting camera from character to another with a full image of their surroundings.

Protagonists, mostly men, mindful of ideas and ideals are suspended between two worlds of action and thought. They are enchanted and at the same time disillusioned by those ideas and ideals. As a result, they end up either in hesitation or in victimization of themselves or others. So are their states toward the women figure, which is reminiscent of archetypal woman by fluctuating between the imagery of great mother and the terrible mother.Yet, what makes the protagonist's dilemma a matter of life and death is his thoughts on figuring ways out primarily, which has indeed brought about the problematic in the first place, and his later reluctance to deal with it. Much like someone keeps repeating these words all through the stories:

-I do not know

Why yet I live to say. "This thing's to do…" [Hamlet, IV, iv]

 Yet, To Hell lives and has things to say.
